It’s OK to not be OK.

Many men have been taught to display strength even when they don’t feel it. But it’s OK to not be OK. Kim who heads up City Men gives us some good tips for managing stress.

When you’re stressed, your body believes it’s under attack and switches to what’s known as ‘fight or flight’ mode. As a result, a mix of hormones and chemicals are released into your body so that you prepare for physical action. Blood might be diverted to muscles, which could cause you to lose concentration or even become less able to digest food. Early signs of stress can include:

• Sweating
• Headaches
• Loss of appetite
• An inability to concentrate

Stress can come in many forms – there are external demands from others at work/home and internal pressure we put on ourselves. Sometimes just stepping away from a stressful situation can make a huge difference, or reaching out to talk to someone. If you would like to talk to Kim he would be very happy to arrange a 1 to 1 with you. Email him here.

As part of #MensMentalHealthAwarenessWeek why not use one of these phrases to use in a conversation to a male friend or colleague to encourage them? Maybe it was the way they led a team meeting, or that they show courage in spite of their struggles.

Encourage the men around you – it might be just what they need!
